4 things to do on rainy days in Vancouver

No matter how long you have been living here, I'm pretty sure that you already heard someone describing this city as "Raincouver". According to the website "Vancouver Weather Stats", the number of days of rain in 2022 in Vancouver was 148, but the yearly average number is 169. 


If you don't know how to continue your life on rainy days, you don't get to live here. That said, here are some tips on what do to or where to go in Vancouver, when it's raining. 



Museum of Vancouver (MOV) 


If you are into history and the past, the Museum of Vancouver is one of the must-go places. Dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of Vancouver via stories, objects, and shared experiences, MOV is a passionate civic advocate. Its purpose is to act as a meeting place that encourages interaction, education, and fresh perspectives on Vancouver's various communities and history. The museum has a fixed exhibition about the history of Vancouver, the 50's gallery, and also, features exhibitions with limited time.

It's a great experience for those who are looking for something to do on that day when the rain won't stop. You can learn more about Vancouver's history, the wars between 1930-1940, and a lot more. 


The admission price for the museum is $20, but you can get a discount as a student and pay $15. 




Public Market Granville Island


Granville Island is one of the must-go places in Vancouver! If you've been here for a long time and haven’t had the chance to visit there yet, this is your plan for the weekend.

Of course, the experience is better on a sunny day, but you can enjoy the Public Market on rainy days. It’s an indoor market with a fantastic selection of vibrant food, produces shops, and artisan goods, all freshly picked from the field, oven, or ocean. You can find hand-craft gifts from the Island and a lot of special memorable souvenirs. If you like to try different types of food and immerse yourself in Canadian culture, the Public Market should be on your list of places to go. 


You can go to Granville Island by bus or the ferry by paying a fee. 




Boarding games at Vancouver Public Library 


For more than 100 years, the Vancouver Public Library has been dedicated to serving the residents of Vancouver's needs for reading, information, and lifelong learning. The Vancouver Public Library is a treasure for book lovers and knowledge seekers in the city, you can check out a book or use a computer. The library also offers a variety of events and programs, including book clubs, story times for children, and guest speakers. 


It’s free! You can borrow books with a library card that you can create whenever you wish. If you are not the “reader” type of person, you can enjoy the library’s space to play games with your friends.

At VPL, you can find multiple options for boarding games, puzzles, and so on. Rain and games are the perfect matches, it’s a good option for inviting your friends who are bored of staying at home on days like that. And of course, it’s cozy and warm to be inside the library.


To create your library card, you just have to bring one of these documents:

  • Adult & Youth (14-18 years): B.C. Driver's license, B.C. Services Card, B.C. ID, (For Youth) You can also bring your student I.D. card issued by B.C. high schools.

If you don’t have any of these documents yet, you can bring a passport and proof of residence. 

Enjoy the free opportunity of growing your knowledge with this diversity of books available at Vancouver Public Library. You won’t even remember that it’s raining when you are having fun playing board games. 




Vancouver Art Gallery 


If you are interested in art and culture, the Vancouver Art Gallery needs to be on your list of places to visit here, especially if it’s raining. Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, the gallery features a wide range of exhibitions that showcase both local and international artists. The permanent collection includes works by famous Canadian artists such as Emily Carr and Lawren Harris, as well as international icons like Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso.


In addition to that, the gallery hosts a temporary exhibition of specific themes or artists, with that, you can understand more deeply the different types of art and expressions. Also, the Vancouver Art Gallery offers a variety of educational programs and events, including artist talks, workshops, and guided tours that provide insight into the works on display and the art world in general.

The Vancouver Art Gallery is definitely a place to go with your friends on a rainy day and enjoy your free time. To visit there you have to book a ticket, the general price is $29, but if you go with a group of more than 10 people, you can get a special discount and each one pay $25. 

Friendly tip: on Tuesday, from 5-8 pm, the admission is by donation, to encourage people to enjoy the art at the price that they can afford.  



Tip for the winter: Robson Square Ice Rink  


❄️This is a bonus tip for winter only! ❄️



The Robson Square Ice Rink is only working for the winter, from December 1st to February 28th. 

It’s a great option to have fun with your friends when it’s raining, although is an outdoor skating rink, there is a roof so you can stay protected from the rain. You don’t need to buy a ticket to go there, you can only rent the skate for $5 and enjoy it as long as you can take it, without falling on the ice. 

The Ice Rink is open every day from 9 am to 9 pm.
